Suggestions for Saving Energy

Susie and Matthew are leaders of the ‘Eco-Schools Project’ at their school. They are

brainstorming ideas for an action plan for saving energy in their school…

Susie: Right, let’s get started! Do you have any tips for saving energy, Matthew?

Matthew: Mm… Well, in our house, we always try to make sure that the washing machine

and dishwasher are full before putting them on. We try to make sure we switch off the lights

when we’re not using them too…

Susie: Those are good ideas! What are we going to do to save energy in our school?

Matthew: OK - Let’s think of ten things we are going to ask students and teachers to do.

Number 1 - Turn off lights and screens when leaving the room… Number 2 - Focus on

recycling, especially paper. Number 3 - Have some classes outside. Can you think of any

more ideas?

Susie: Those are great ideas! Mm… Number 4 - Close the doors of any unused rooms…

Number 5 – Install solar panels… Number 6 - Invest in energy-efficient equipment…We

need 4 more ideas…

Matthew: Number 7 could be using technology to monitor energy use… Number 8 could be

switching computers for laptops to save energy

Susie: Great ideas! Number 9 - Give students jobs to do around the school to save energy.

Matthew: And the final one… Number 10… What about turning old things into new things?

Susie: Yes - fantastic! We have 10 action items to present at the Eco-Schools meeting. Let’s

write up our list…
